The Algorithm Isn’t Your Audience (Here’s who is and why it matters)


Not every post is made for the social media algorithm.

And not every post is made for the person who’s going to comment a fire emoji five seconds after you hit publish.

When we’re building content strategies for brands, we think a lot less about generic “ideal client” profiles and a lot more about real patterns we see constantly in the way people engage (or don’t engage) with content online.

There are certain groups that show up again and again, no matter the industry or aesthetic. And understanding these groups (these audience archetypes) helps us create content that feels less forced, more intentional, and way more human.

Here are three we always keep in mind:

THE SCROLLER-STALKER

You won’t find them in your likes, comments, or DMs, but they see everything. They’re the ones who know you’re launching something new before you’ve even teased it. They’re watching your Stories, clicking through your website, and absorbing your brand voice like a sponge.

They’re not flaky. They’re just cautious. And when they’re ready? They convert fast.

We post for them when we’re laying breadcrumbs: a behind-the-scenes, a quick tip, a story that reveals what it’s really like to work with you. No hard sell—just consistency, clarity, and trust.

THE SKEPTICAL BUYER

They want to buy… but they’ve been burned before.

They’re looking for red flags and green lights. They need three things before they’ll even consider investing:

  • Proof that you know what you’re doing
  • A vibe check that says “we actually get along”
  • A little bit of social validation (aka: who else is trusting you?)

We post for them when we share case studies, testimonials that don’t feel copy-pasted, or Reel voiceovers that say exactly what they’re thinking. We’re not here to over-explain…just to show up like someone who actually knows their stuff.

THE SILENT SUPPORTER

They don’t engage publicly, but they’re your hype person behind the scenes.

They’re the ones sharing your post in the group chat. Recommending you to friends. Rooting for you. They don’t want to be the center of attention online, but they’re quietly helping your brand grow… even if they don’t realize it.

We post for them when we focus on shareability. Not in a “tag three friends” way, but in the “this made me think of you” kind of way. Relatable moments, small business truths, aesthetic quotes with a wink of humor.

HERE’S THE POINT

When you stop creating content just to “hit metrics,” and start creating for real behavior patterns, your strategy gets a lot more real.
